Could Roberts be Japan bound?

Wales and Harlequins centre Jamie Roberts is considering a move to Japan at the end of the season. As a Quins fan, I’ve loved seeing Roberts play, however felt his impact has been somewhat limited in the current structure. With John Kingston looking reluctant to resign a player at the age of 31, Roberts possible move to Japan could prove a fitting swansong to a great career in the sport.

The rich Asian clubs are busy launching a recruitment drive before the 2019 World Cup — with Dan Carter recently signing for the Kobelco Steelers. Roberts, 31, who will be out of contract with Harlequins in the summer and could be the next big recruit to the Top League.

Roberts is stated to have said ‘Japan is certainly an option to explore and we’ll see what comes of it,’ he said. ‘I definitely wouldn’t rule it out. You’ve got to make your decisions for the right reasons and I’ll make a decision over the next month or six weeks. I’d like to think I can play at the top level for a few years yet.’

Personally I think it would be a great move for a player who has excelled in the Wales team and been loyal to Quins, but who now finds himself possibly on the fringes of selection for both teams.
